I have never seen it happen live so far, it always happened when I was away from the machine for some time. System is Debian unstable, xserver-xorg-core package version is 1.10.1-2, but the problem has been occuring for some months now. After a few seconds the white screen goes away, the fan stops, the monitor goes into standby, and the whole os is unresponsive (no sysrq keys). Rebooting shows no sign that the kernel even knows anything happened (in dmesg, etc). This only occurs if you use wine with glsl=enabled. glsl=disabled shows a semi-corrupt menu which you can exit without killing your system. I'm on kernel 2.6.39-rc2 (built with NMI) and mesa git from 2011/04/08 (xorg-edgers ppa). The card is a Barts chip (6870), and glxinfo shows I'm using r600g. Wine is version 1.3.17. If it matters, the NMI never comes. One of the monitors enters power-saving mode when I try this. Monitors are, from left to right: DVI-1 (1680x1050 LCD) DisplayPort-1 (1920x1080 LCD) DVI-0 (1680x1050 LCD) Configuring a desktop with all monitors set to their maximum resolution causes one of the two DVI-connected monitors to enter power-saving mode. The mouse cursor will still "disappear" into this monitor as if it were enabled. No error messages appear in either X.org.log or dmesg. It is non-deterministic as to which monitor turns off of the two DVI-connected monitors. I can configure a desktop with, for example, 1280x1024, 1920x1080, 1280x1024 for resolutions (left to right) and all three monitors will function properly. I cannot use 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1680x1050, as one of the DVI monitors will enter power saving mode. I have tested, and this hardware configuration will function with the proprietary fglrx driver, and under Windows, so the card/monitors do not appear at fault. I have tried the 2.6.38 release candidate kernels, and this feature has never functioned correctly, so I don't think it's a regression. The oops below was produced twice. I've got a bunch of related symptoms; I installed the daily build because I was getting instances of [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Failed to parse relocation -35! (which I think is EDEADLOCK) doing similar combinations of going in and out of full screen flash. I've also seen when I try to go into full screen rapid flickering as if it can't decide whether to go into full screen or stay out; once that's triggered that flickering can repeat itself when starting other apps. Reproduce: 1. $export vblank_mode=0 // switching of vsync 2. Launch an IOQuake3 based game (Quake3 Arena, OpenArena, World of Padman...) 3. check that VSYNC in IOQuake3 is also disabled! 4. Start a game and set "cg_drawpfs 1", know you should have at the top right corner a display with your current framerate which is hopefully over 60 fps 5. switch to a tty during playing (should be no problem with Kernel-Mode-Setting) 6. #pm-suspend (as root) 7. resume from suspend 8. switch back to X11/IOQuake3 -> framerate is limited to 60 fps To fix this you have to relaunch IOQuake3 or simply type into quake-console "vid_restart". With Mesa-Classic and the R600-Driver this is not necessary, it displays always the maximum possible framerate.
