Summary: 48 fps and 50 fps video decoding is stutter on UVD
Severity: normal

dmesg
48 fps and 50 fps video decoding is stutter on UVD, even 720p. UVD on Radeon
6310 with fglrx driver as able to decode up to 1080p 50 fps video with zero
dropper frames so hardware is capable of decoding such framerate.
There is 48 fps sample
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11564551/Inception_trailer_48fps.mkv but I want to
notice - many camcorders record 1080p50 or even 1080p60 video this days, so
this issue not just about trailers that upscaled from 24 to 48 fps.

From: Thierry Reding <treding(a)nvidia.com>
The version of the drm_tegra_submit structure that was merged all the
way back in 3.10 contains a pad field that was originally intended to
properly pad the following __u64 field. Unfortunately it seems like a
different field was dropped during review that caused this padding to
become unnecessary, but the pad field wasn't removed at that time.
One possible side-effect of this is that since the __u64 following the
pad is now no longer properly …
[View More]aligned, the compiler may (or may not)
introduce padding itself, which results in no predictable ABI.
Rectify this by removing the pad field so that all fields are again
naturally aligned. Technically this is breaking existing userspace ABI,
but given that there aren't any (released) userspace drivers that make
use of this yet, the fallout should be minimal.

This is leftover stuff from my previous doc round which I kinda wanted
to do but didn't yet due to rebase hell.
The modeset helpers and the probing helpers a independent and e.g.
i915 uses the probing stuff but has its own modeset infrastructure. It
hence makes to split this up. While at it add a DOC: comment for the
probing libraray.
It would be rather neat to pull some of the DocBook documenting these
two helpers into in-line DOC: comments. But unfortunately kerneldoc
doesn't support …
[View More]markdown or something similar to make nice-looking
documentation, so the current state is better.

Jesse's BIOS fb reconstruction code actually relies on the -ENOSPC
return value to detect overlapping framebuffers (which the bios uses
always when lighting up more than one screen). All this fanciness
happens in intel_alloc_plane_obj in intel_display.c.
Since no one else uses this we can savely remove the WARN without
repercursions.

I can confirm this bug. I am currently using an MSI Radeon R9 270X, and fan
speeds are indeed at around 40% with no ability to make adjustments.

Screenshot showing garbage area after scrolling to the right.
Example application for testing: TV Browser (see screenshot)
When scrolling to the right, the contents of the scrolled area become garbled.
Moving the mouse pointer over elements in the garbled area apparently causes a
redraw of that element, fixing the issue, but the other elements are not
redrawn.
This does not occur when scrolling to the left. If the area is garbled and one
scrolls to the left, everything is redrawn and appears correctly again.
This may be confined to java applications, and I only noticed this in tvbrowser
(http://tvbrowser.org). Unfortunately I don't have any other java applications
available to test.
Reproducible on the following hardware:
ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
ATI Technologies Inc Device 6719 (HD 6950 Cayman)
