FWIW: the problem with the white top of the screen is the same on Intel with the i965 driver, so it's probably a general problem with Mesa.
Maybe this bug needs splitting, or is there already bug opened about this problem with i965 driver? However I'm not sure if this is the same issue, I think the DRI and gallium drivers use different codepaths?
