Better in terms of what gets called but unfortunately still a black screen without xset dance. Attached are two logs in one file. First sections is debug from plugging in the monitor only. Second sections is after xset dpms force off and on (but only the "on" bit). Looks like interesting things are happening in both cases, but only second one results with video output.
