I was curious to test even with the kernel before the patch and I found that dmesg | grep waiting does not show anything. Maybe the debug line wasn't added yet.

That message was there before the patch. So the fact that you don't see it means that it is really not even trying to synchronize with vblank.

Most likely DDX is (as it should) refusing to call the ioctl due to the old kernel.
