I finally found the root cause for my problems.

Turns out my CPU was overheating. But I only stressed it enough when playing
games and nothing showed up in the logs about a shutdown due to heat. Once i
resolved the overheating all my games ran smoothly with no crashes. apologies
for the noise.

Wish I had found it sooner.
