Run through ssh "udevadm monitor" when pluging/unpluging screen you should see event there. If you don't it's kernel issue, if you do it might be your ddx was not build with the uevent code enabled (which would be a distribution issue). You can try building your ddx yourself and make sure you have libudev-devel

That is not the problem because I see X RandR events on plug events (DDX built with libudev support) and this is only a problem on DisplayPort.
