Thanks for the reply, here is the dmesg of such a boot. Its been i while since i reported something on i915 (this has been stable for a loong time for me). didnt remember where to file a bug.
in the end, there is a suspend cycle which fixes it.
i will try your patch this afternoon and report back.

I tend to not read lkml, too much stuff there ;-) Anyway, please boot with drm.debug=0xe added to your kernel, and the grab the complete dmesg.
For easier tracking it'd be great if you could file this as a bug on bugs.freedesktop.org against DRI -> DRM/Intel
Also, please try the patch at

it makes the vbt edp handling a bit more robust, which could be enough already to get the mbp retina going again.
