However, the kernel log is spammed with [drm:drm_crtc_helper_set_config] *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:14]
Well, X is sending totally nonsense to the kernel. It's actually good that the logs get spammed so somebody notices that something is really going wrong here.
