Those are *extremely old* (and I mean over ten years old) kernels and userspaces. Of course old UMS distros will work fine. Try installing the current Debian powerpc (on the G4) and ppc64 (on the G5) ports and force-enable AGP on the Radeon kernel driver (radeon.agpmode=0), you'll understand what we mean by "unstable". ;)
