Unfortunately I don't have any more ideas either. There must be some undocumented limitation on RS880 and maybe older chips that don't seem to exists any more on newer ones.
Unfortunately my last RS880 based system blow up about a month ago, so I can't test this any more.
Please test the attached patch, it just artificial limits the reference divider to 7 on RS880 and older chips. If that works I'm going to submit the patch upstream.
