In the configuration used by the b850v3, the STDP2690 is used to read EDID data whilst it's the STDP4028 which can detect when monitors are connected.
This can result in problems at boot with monitors connected when the STDP4028 is probed first, a monitor is detected and an attempt is made to read the EDID data before the STDP2690 has probed:

Split the registration from the STDP4028 probe routine and only perform registration once both the STDP4028 and STDP2690 have probed.

stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() seems to contain an identical snippet, so I assume symmetry is why both stdp2690_i2c and stdp4028_i2c are checked in both locations. Unless you think otherwise, I would suggest removing the stdp4028_i2c check from stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and the stdp2690_i2c check from stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe().

My reading of this code is that stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() are racing, and the 2nd driver to probe will go ahead and call ge_b850v3_register(). Is there any reason why EPROBE_DEFER isn't used here?

stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() seems to contain an identical snippet, so I assume symmetry is why both stdp2690_i2c and stdp4028_i2c are checked in both locations. Unless you think otherwise, I would suggest removing the stdp4028_i2c check from stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and the stdp2690_i2c check from stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe().

My reading of this code is that stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() are racing, and the 2nd driver to probe will go ahead and call ge_b850v3_register(). Is there any reason why EPROBE_DEFER isn't used here?
The issue is that the way these are (pre)configured and wired up in the device, monitor detection is performed by one chip and the other chip is wired for access to the edid.
If the probe for the chip handling presence detection (4028) is registered before the EDID access is properly setup, it tries to perform an EDID access, resulting in the panic.
As mentioned in the original commit[1] for this driver, the two bridges here have custom firmware, as a result neither the STDP4028 nor the STDP2690 behave as the stock bridges would. The drive isn't able to control the video processing pipeline as a result, with the driver mainly needed to perform hot plug detection and read the EDID.
As the bridges basically function as one custom bridge in this instance, the approach I've taken is to ensure that both parts are initialised before registering as this avoided the need to defer.

Split the registration from the STDP4028 probe routine and only perform registration once both the STDP4028 and STDP2690 have probed.

stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() seems to contain an identical snippet, so I assume symmetry is why both stdp2690_i2c and stdp4028_i2c are checked in both locations. Unless you think otherwise, I would suggest removing the stdp4028_i2c check from stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and the stdp2690_i2c check from stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe().

return 0;My reading of this code is that stdp4028_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() and stdp2690_ge_b850v3_fw_probe() are racing, and the 2nd driver to probe will go ahead and call ge_b850v3_register(). Is there any reason why EPROBE_DEFER isn't used here?
The issue is that the way these are (pre)configured and wired up in the device, monitor detection is performed by one chip and the other chip is wired for access to the edid.
If the probe for the chip handling presence detection (4028) is registered before the EDID access is properly setup, it tries to perform an EDID access, resulting in the panic.
As mentioned in the original commit[1] for this driver, the two bridges here have custom firmware, as a result neither the STDP4028 nor the STDP2690 behave as the stock bridges would. The drive isn't able to control the video processing pipeline as a result, with the driver mainly needed to perform hot plug detection and read the EDID.
As the bridges basically function as one custom bridge in this instance, the approach I've taken is to ensure that both parts are initialised before registering as this avoided the need to defer.
