Bug ID: 102389 Summary: Random black screen on RX 470, HDMI 4k-60Hz Product: DRI Version: unspecified Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64) OS: Linux (All) Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: medium Component: DRM/AMDgpu Assignee: dri-devel@lists.freedesktop.org Reporter: jeremi.jasinski@gmail.com
I am using amd-staging on arch linux - https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-amd-staging-git/ and AMD RX 470.
I have 4k monitor (AOC U2879VF), which display port connector has broken, so i'm forced to use HDMI. On dp there were no problem, unfortunately while using HDMI 4k 60Hz I get random black screen, lasting for 1-2 seconds, while using my computer (watching movie, playing games, or browsing internet).
The black screens happens since at least 4.11 amd-staging-git version.
I attached dmesg log, and xorg log. If you need something else please tell me.

--- Comment #4 from jeremi.jasinski@gmail.com --- I've changed system to Kde Neon, with stock kernel: 4.10.0-33 and amdgpu-pro driver, but the problem is persistent.
I'm attaching new dmesg and Xorg log files. I don't know if errors in dmesg are causing black screens, because they come up at different time then the black screens. So maybe it's problem with monitor?
I've also noticed that black screen happened at least once in virtual console.
This problem is really annoying, if you need some other logs, or information please write, and I'll try to provide it.

--- Comment #7 from dwagner jb5sgc1n.nya@20mm.eu --- Just a thought: The symptom you describe ("random black screen, lasting for 1-2 seconds") can be caused by bad HDMI cables - especially when using 4k / 60Hz modes - I had experienced that in the past on two occasions.
Have you tried using a different (preferably short, high-quality) cable?
BTW: Only very few HDMI cable vendors guarantee their products to work up to 600MHz clock frequency, which you require for 4k 60Hz.

--- Comment #8 from jeremi.jasinski@gmail.com --- Thank you for your response. I've tried two different cables, and none of them fixed the problem.
I will buy dedicated 4k 60hz cable and see if theres any difference.

--- Comment #9 from jeremi.jasinski@gmail.com --- I still have this problem, on linux 4.15 on KDE Neon with dc enabled.
So I bought DP to HDMI active converter, which supports 4k 60hz. While using this converter and the same HDMI cable, blackscreens disappeared. That would indicate, that the problem is in driver, not in bad cable.
