Summary: screen flickers all the time with desktop image appearing only briefly Product: DRI Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: critical Priority: medium Component: DRM/Radeon AssignedTo: dri-devel@lists.freedesktop.org ReportedBy: 3ntr0p13@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=41344) --> (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=41344) dmesg
Machine is the same as in bug report 28331 although with different software components: Acer Aspire L5100 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+, this time running a 64 bits debian squeeze.
The machine is a small factor desktop machine designed around laptop components, so the graphic card is an integrated radeon x1200.
When running a linux vanilla kernel 2.6.37-rc6, the screen flickers all the time making the machine unusable, while with debian kernel 2.6.32-5 such "flick to black" event occur from time to time, making it annoying but usable.
While booting with radeon.modeset=0 the problem doesn't exhibits itself
The following packages version from debian squeeze are installed: xserver-xorg 1:7.5+8 xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-10 xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.1-2+squeeze1
Please find attached Xorg.0.log, dmesg, register dumps for ums and kms for that machine (when booted on 2.6.37-rc6).

adjust up the clock slightly on rs6xx TDMS
Does this patch help?
This patch seems to help when combined with "RADEON_PLL_USE_FRAC_FB_DIV | RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_HIGHER |RADEON_PLL_NO_ODD_POST_DIV".
For now after a single session of 2h, it even seems more stable than ums (where occasional losses of images happen maybe every 20-30mins on average).
I've tried other combinations as well with various success:
- RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_LOWER => unstable-ish - RADEON_PLL_USE_FRAC_FB_DIV => black - RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_LOWER | RADEON_PLL_USE_FRAC_FB_DIV => not very stable - RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_HIGHER => not stable - RADEON_PLL_USE_FRAC_FB_DIV | RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_HIGHER => not stable
I can provide the registers for the different tests if that could be of any uses.

As far as I can tell the problem seems to be solved with adjusted_clock += 50; and RADEON_PLL_USE_FRAC_FB_DIV | RADEON_PLL_PREFER_CLOSEST_HIGHER |RADEON_PLL_NO_ODD_POST_DIV.
After 3 hours of use (including watching video), 1 reboot and 1 cold boot, the screen never flicked, which not only means the bug concerned by this bug report is fixed, but apparently there is even an improvement over the previous situation.

Connection on the viewsonic using dvi seem to be stable for all definitions. I'll confirm after a few days using 1680x1050.
Vga connection to the analog SGI screen seem OK too.
On the Iiyama 24" with the HDMI attachment, I have noted the "turn black 3 secs and display image again" syndrom is still there though (I'd say once every 5-!0 mn on average).
