As I mentioned in the past I use xbindkeys in my $HOME a file called, .xbindkeysrc and these are the command I use below;

################################## # End of xbindkeys configuration # ##################################

# My keybindings

#decrease brightness "~/.config/openbox/backlight-dn.sh" m:0x0 + c:71 F5

#increase brightness "~/.config/openbox/backlight-up.sh" m:0x0 + c:72 F6

Which simply run;

xbacklight -inc 10 xbacklight -dec 10

Seeing that xbacklight works in this situation, does that help shed light on comiing up with a solution?
