Any news on the real cause of the problem?

When running in HDMI mode, the monitor expects properly formatted CEA infoframe packets (for audio, 3D, colorspace, etc.) from the source, however, at the moment, we don't yet have support for them in the open source driver for evergreen hw. The monitor can misinterpret the bogus/missing infoframe packets and do strange things.
